Everest base camp is one of the classic treks in the world and follows in the footsteps of mountaineering legends along one of the most spectacular valleys in the world, the Khumbu. From day one, you’ll be trekking in the shadows of 6,000 meter peaks, beside the raging Khumbu river and passing through mountain villages, which are only accessible by foot. Staying in tea houses you’ll be immersed in Nepali culture, and the stay in Namsee Bazzare , the Sherpa capital, a true treat.
The trek into the Gokyo valley is quieter than the main Khumbu valley and you’ll get to experience a sense of solitude away from the main tourist route. Once at the top of the Valley you’ll be walking next to the Ngozumpa glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas at 3.7 miles long. It starts on the flanks of Cho Oyu, which at 8,201m is the 6th highest mountain in the world. From here, you’ll climb your first Himalayan summit, Gokyo Ri (5,357m) where you’ll be inspired by the fantastically picturesque vista from the summit. The peaks of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu are clearly visable along with 100′s of unnamed summits. You’ll also be able to look back down to the valley and see the blue waters of the Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa glacier.
The next few days the trek will take us over the Cho La Pass and back in to the Khumbu valley. The route then passes through Lobuche village and onto Everest Base Camp (5365m). You’ll then have the option to climb Kalapathar at 5545m to witness the spectacular sunrise over Everest. The return route takes us down the Khumbu under the watchful eye of Ama Dablam (6,812m) and here, there will time to visit the Tengboche Monastery with an overnight stay in Namche Bazzar. Our final night of the trek is in the village of Lukla before our flight back to Kathmandu.
